He's had tanuki-like black rings around his eyes his whole life, which can be attributed to his insomnia. As a child, he carved the symbol for "love" (愛, ai) on the left side of his forehead, which his hair is parted in order for it to be kept visible.

Sand Magic: Gaara uses this form of magic to generate and manipulate sand.
Sand Magic: Crushing Sand Clod 「砂魔法『圧殺の砂塊』 Suna Mahō "Assatsu no Sakai"」: With an open grimoire, the user generates a large block of sand and drops it on the target. This sand can absorb water.
Creation Magic: Gaara uses this form of magic to manifest any entities that he desires. Gaara uses this magic to create objects composed of sand that could be used for offense and defense purposes.
Sand Creation Magic: Sand Armored Guard 「砂創成魔法『砂鎧の番兵』 Suna Sōsei Mahō "Sagai no Banpei"」: With an open grimoire, the user summons a sentry-like golem which consists entirely of sand. Additionally, the user is free to choose the location where they would like to create the golem. Upon its creation, the sand guard is able to perform any task that the user desires. One of those could be to restrain an opponent.
Sand Creation Magic: Sand Armored Heavy Soldier 「砂創成魔法『砂鎧の重装兵』 Suna Sōsei Mahō "Sagai no Jūsō-hei"」: With an open grimoire, the user summons a warrior-like golem which consists entirely of sand. Additionally, the user is free to choose the location where they would like to create the golem. Upon its creation, the sand soldier is able to perform any task that the user desires. Due to the sheer size of the golem, it could easily decimate multiple targets in a single attack.
Restraining Magic: Gaara uses this form of magic to create any sand-based objects that he could use to restrain his opponent.
Sand Restraining Magic: Sand Binding Prison 「砂拘束魔法『砂縛牢』 Suna Kōsoku Mahō "Sabaku Rō"」: With an open grimoire, a perfectly airtight space is created, in which the enemy is captured. An enormous quantity of sand completely envelops the target from every direction and captures them.
