    The Grassy Plains

The grassy plains stretch across a wide area. Groups of trees can be found occasionally, though far away from the center of the field. The weather is always sunny but also cool, as calm winds constantly blow through the area in a relaxing breeze. The rather big clouds add to the extraordinary setting of the landscape, whereas the lack of obstacles makes the area perfect for fighting.

Nodding at Raizo’s statement, the young man watched his friend turn around and walk away. He could feel that this was his last time seeing him, but apparently the duration would soon be extended, as Raizo stopped and proposed a spar. “I guess I can spare some time for that.” thought the Commander, trying to remember when he had last fought seriously. He occasionally had spars with Shisui; although the process of the fight would differ each time, it had become somewhat boring to face the same abilities over and over again. This was a good opportunity to step out of the shadow of the usual, monotone fighting. With a smirk, he closed the distance in between slowly. Once he was standing close to Raizo, he put his right hand on his shoulder and placed a Hiraishin mark. Their surroundings simultaneously started to warp, as they left the Central Plaza and arrived in one of the many pocket dimensions Shuren had for fighting. The grassy plains stretched across a wide area. Groups of trees could be found around, though far away from the center of the field. The weather was sunny but also cool, as calm winds constantly blew through the area in a relaxing breeze. The rather big clouds added to the extraordinary setting of the landscape, whereas the lack of obstacles made the area perfect for fighting. After their arrival, Shuren shunpoed about 20 meters away from the Shinigami. “Be my guest.” he said while unsheathing his sword. He wasn’t going to use all of his power, yet it didn’t kill to be cautious either. Beginning the fight with his sword drawn was a sign of the Commander taking his opponent seriously, since he often preferred beginning with simple Kidou.

Alarmed at the sudden change of location at first, Raizo calmed down when he recognized the dimensional warping of Shuren's Hiraishin technique. He had only been on the wrong end of Hiraishin once, but Raizo still knew its power in battle. Thankfully it wasn't being deployed in such a fashion at the moment.

    "Ah, this place."

For a moment, Raizo forgot that he and Shuren would soon be crossing swords and simply enjoyed the nostalgia of this familiar area. The Grassy Plains had been where he had trained and been trained countless times. A place deeply tied to his memories of the Tenth Divison, Raizo was unsure of whether this was the true arena or some conjuring of Shuren's. The Visored Commander was a giant in the world of Kido masters - recreating an entire area wouldn't be outside of his abilities.

The soft hiss of steel on scabbard drew Raizo's attention away his reverie and back towards his companion. Well, now Shuren would be his opponent, Raizo mused. Unsure of how much the other man remembered of the Captain's abilities, Raizo decided to take the battle one step at a time. Drawing his own sword, the Shinigami glanced at the glimmering beauty of his Zanpakuto as if mildly interested by it. He turned his eyes to Shuren. As Raizo spoke, he lifted his left hand towards his sternum and made a single hand seal. This gesture was the Tairitsu seal that activated Raizo's Tendo abilities.

"My Zanpakuto is excited... she's always wanted to really fight with you."

As if to indicate her anticipation, a single bolt of static electricity danced across Tenrei's edge. Raizo smiled and inclined his head towards the blade to reinforce what his Zanpakuto had clearly just said. Then, Raizo rushed at Shuren head-on, leaving a small crater in the ground behind him with the force of his movement. The Captain could hear his own voice having chided a thousand recruits for attacking in exactly this type of fashion. But, Raizo thought, there would be time for subtlety and finesse later. The Shinigami's blade hummed upwards towards Shuren's left ribs, the savage power behind the strike contrasting with the sophisticated beauty of its agent.

Raizo’s remark upon arriving on the area indicated that he had felt a similarity with the arena that was present in the Tenth Division. It was true that Shuren had created this pocket dimension all by himself, though he had based it on the original one. He liked the plains quite a lot; it was almost the same as his own inner world, except there weren’t any wind turbines here. Following this statement the young man listened to his friend speak about his Zanpakutou wanting to fight him. This wasn’t the first time he had heard about that, yet he couldn’t help but think. “Hmm… What would a sword know about my abilities?” Though his thoughts were slightly condescending, he didn’t reflect it outside since he was well aware that his friend had meant it as a compliment.

As the Shinigami ran towards him, Shuren adjusted his stance. He moved his right foot back and turned it clockwise for several degrees. After strengthening his posture as well, he was ready to counter Raizo. He could guess that his opening attack would incorporate Zanjutsu, so he held his sword with both of his hands. The Shinigami’s sword sliced upwards towards his ribs, which he blocked with a downward diagonal slash from left to right. The energy generated by their swords clashing sent out ripples of air from their center, signifying the force they both put in their attacks. Although Shuren had several ways of attacking from this point on, which ultimately required him to release his powers, he decided to take a more direct and rather basic approach. The last time Raizo had seen him fight seriously was back when he was a Vice-Captain. Given the length of that time, he wanted to keep the element of surprise for a little longer. With both of his hands still gripping on Shinseikaze’s hilt, Shuren made his right hand’s index and middle fingers point at Raizo. His angle was a bit problematic, so he could only aim it at his right shoulder. Without losing any time, he released a crimson colored beam of energy. This was the modified version of the fourth Hadou spell, Juugeki Byakurai. Unlike its counterpart, its piercing quality excelled beyond other spells. It was effective to use even from longer distances, so given their short distance now Shuren was curious to see how Raizo would respond.

Ah, Kido. The one Shinigami art that Raizo, a Captain of the Tenth Division, had absolutely no skill in whatsoever. It was always a weak point against which Raizo had to halt charges and become a more thoughtful fighter. Focusing on the other Captain's attack, Raizo wordlessly activated his Shikai and invoked its defensive technique. ]

    "Jihi!"

An umbrella-like hemisphere of white light burst out of the blade of Raizo's Zanpakuto, blocking the powerful Modified Kido spell for a moment. This spell, however, would quickly pierce Raizo's shield if not dealt with. It made sense, Raizo noted, that Shuren would employ Kido, given his renown in it. Perhaps it was time to unveil his own developments in Tendo. Using his partially enhanced strength, Raizo deflected the Juugeki Byakurai to his side, where it imapcted in a tank-sized crater. In the same movement, he charged again with his sword above his head at Shuren, hoping to take him by surprise in his counterattack. As the Shinigami Captain swung down his sword in a straight slash, a shrill ringing sound broke out as white light crackled across the blade. It announced the presence of Raizo's offensive technique, Hanketsu. Unlike its defense, energy-dampening counterpart, Hanketsu was a technique that essentially turned the sword into an electromagnetic buzzsaw, similar to a Quincy's Seele Schneider. The Hanketsu aura flared in the blade and surrounded it, amplifying its cutting power for a powerful blow - and then, Raizo was gone.

Reappearing a tenth of a second later, Raizo pointed his sword, tucked under his left arm, behind his back at Shuren's back. Had Raizo been meaning to execute that feinted slash, Hanketsu would not have been ready to attack. However, the Shinigami had actually charged his technique whilst he used Shunpo to move around the other combatant. Now that he was behind Shuren, Raizo had summoned Tenrei's full strength as he unleashed a torrent of burning white electromagnetic energy at the Visored Commander's back.

Raizo essentially deflected his spell, sending it away from himself. A well-executed move, or so thought Shuren. From there on, Raizo started charging his blade. The commander could identify what he was doing; he was well-versed in his old comrade’s abilities. Although he didn’t expect the man to unleash his Shikai so early on in the fight, it excited him to know that his opponent was seemingly aware of what would happen if he took their small exchange lightly. With a smile, the young Vizard debated within his mind whether Raizo’s attack had been fully charged, as the man kept advancing towards him. With his body reflexively positioning itself, Shuren awaited an attack. But he was left disappointed; Raizo had shunpoed at the last second. “How unoriginal.” he criticized silently in his mind; he had seen similar feints perhaps thousands of times. It had become easy to guess where he would appear next. Knowing that and not wanting to take chances, since he was pretty sure Raizo’s technique would have been fully charged by now, the young man gave the fastest reaction he could. “Hiraishin!” Using the marker he had placed on their way here, the commander was able to warp away from the electromagnetic energy. He reappeared in a similar fashion to Raizo; he was standing several meters behind his back. Yet, unlike him he wasn’t planning to advance directly. Instead he jumped back, high into the air, and took out two of his kunai. Without wasting any time, he threw both of them towards Raizo: one aimed at the man’s neck whereas the other was flying towards his lower back. He waited patiently as he started his descent.

It would be interesting to see how this battle played out, Raizo thought. The Tenth Division Captain had purposefully chosen to hasten his decision to use more powerful techniques like his Shikai and Hanketsu because he knew there was little point in not using them. In combat, fighters usually concealed their best techniques until the opportune moment to surprise the opponent. With Raizo and Shuren, they already were familiar with how the other did battle. Unsurprisingly (though unexpectedly), Shuren had already used Hiraishin. Since Raizo wasn't yet tired, it did make more sense for Shuren to use a ranged attack as opposed to an instant close-range attack. However, it made it easy for the Shinigami to deflect them one after the other with lazy upward slashes. The two kunai flew away into the ground, about ten meters from Raizo.

The deflection had taken all of two seconds - Raizo decided not to move, curious as to what his opponent would do next. In the meantime, he activated the Tori seal, which would triple his maximum base level of speed.

Watching the man deflect his kunai without much difficulty, Shuren’s descent came to an end as he landed on the ground. “Nicely done Raizo.” commented the young man upon landing. Perhaps the best aspect of Hiraishin was how it let him catch his opponents off-guard. Although he knew he could utilize that to an extent, he felt like he would be forcing himself to execute an attack he didn’t want to perform.“Not surprising though. Is it? I expected you to do so. And I assume you expected me to get out of there with Hiraishin. We have seen each other fight countless times, after all.” he said. Looking at Raizo he could feel that he was thinking the same way. The winds started to blow; at first mildly and several seconds later violently. The sheer force of the air currents moving at vast speeds made it hard to move around. Though naturally, Shuren was an exception: since he was the one creating the movements of the air, he was a part of them rather than being an obstacle to them. The air around his skin and clothes gave off a momentary white glow, as the air resistance around his body decreased further. This signified the release of his Shikai. He could now move and maneuver easily, being much faster than before, whereas his overwhelming reiatsu resonated across the fields for the first time since their arrival. Even though that wasn’t all his Shikai enabled him to do, he felt like this time it wasn’t enough.

“So maybe it’s time to spice things up.” he said, fully aware that it was possible for Raizo not to hear his words, since the intensity of the winds increased yet again. A spark of spiritual pressure flickered like a flame on his left shoulder. The same happened on his right abdomen, then his head and then several other parts of his body at an increasing rate. “Bankai.” he uttered, as dark gray markings advanced through his clothes and his skin. The latter shortly became completely white as the flickering flames (which were actually his spiritual pressure) covered his entire body. Ten spheres of dark grey spiritual pressure appeared behind his back. “Kamishini no Kaze.” he said calmly, his voice echoing now. Without a notice he increased the intensity of the winds, to the point where the weather started to feel cold despite being clear and sunny. He wasn’t going to make it easy on his friend; knowing it was not easy to even remain standing at the same spot, he made a moving motion with his hand and created three miniature tornados that advanced towards Raizo, all several times bigger than him. At the current weather conditions, it had become much easier for him to knock a target off its balance. Once that happened the tornados would engulf the lad and from there on Shuren would act accordingly. But for now, he didn’t move away from the spot he had landed on and like before, waited to see how things would unfold.

The typhoon-like winds and the dark markings appearing upon Shuren's face told Raizo what he could not hear. This was the release of his opponent's Bankai. It was ironic, really. Raizo had hoped for a quick release of power so that the two would hold no strength back in an earnest contest of power. But having not seen Kamishini no Kaze in many years, the Captain could not help but shiver a bit. In the Shinigami's estimation, the Visored Commander's Zanpakuto was one of the strongest elemental Zanpakuto he had ever faced - perhaps even the strongest of the wind-types. There was little time. Raizo invoked the final Tendo seals, his fingers flashing through their ritual positions.

    "Tairitsu. Kame. Tori. Tora."

In that moment, Raizo reach his peak of physical strength. Roaring with power, he momentarily abandoned himself to the drunkenness that great power sometimes imparted. Just before Shuren invoked his tornadoes, Raizo delivered a mighty chop to the ground, crying out,

    "Kamiou no Shou!"

The shockwave that would emanate from the point that Tenrei struck the ground would ripple through the earth with tremendous power. An onlooker might be confused as to whether this was an earthquake or simply a churning ocean covered in earth and grass, so utterly and quickly would the ground move under the force of Raizo's strongest Zanjutsu technique. Had a castle stood in Shuren's place, it would cease to exist, ground to chaff in an instant.

But it would matter little. Whether Shuren was struck by Kamiou no Shou, Raizo had a new predicament. He had (and rather foolishly, he remarked) gambled his mobility for a killing stroke. While Kamiou no Shou reduced the land to rubble. Raizo himself was now bound by three tornadoes. Struggling was to no avail. The Shinigami might be at his highest level of physical power, but before this wind, a wind that howled with the terrifying power of Shuren's Bankai, Raizo was but a fly in the face of a storm. It was time, Raizo thought.

    "Ban...kai."

Tenrei shone in Raizo's hand so brightly it might as well have been the sword of the Thunder God himself. If one looked beyond its searing brilliance, they would hear the dampened sound of metal shearing. Over Raizo's Shihakusho, a black and silver armor formed, buzzing with the same lightning-like energy that coursed through Tenrei's blade. Adorned in the battle regalia of a god of war, Raizo's eyes burned with a white light that pierced all things. Through the power of those eyes of Tengan, the vision that Raizo's Bankai offered, the Captain saw that he had two choices. He was trapped in the tornadoes, unable to physically break away. While he could fire blasts of energy from his sword at Shuren, it would do little to improve Raizo's situation - energy would not disperse the wind. Instead, his hope lay in one technique. An ability he had cultivated after Shuren and Raizo had trained to discover the Shinoda Head's Bankai.

    "Sekaisho Tenrei!"

As Raizo proclaimed his Bankai's name, he managed to wrench his sword up to his chest and grasp it in both hands. With all his strength, he drew on his reserves of power, falling to his knees as the wind beat down upon him mercilessly. Noone would hear the whisper that escaped from the Shinigami's mouth.

    "Makuya."

Normally the Shinigami wouldn't say the ability's name, as it rather defeated the point of an invisible ability. However, it did not matter. Raizo could not afford to not say the name and lose the power imparted from a spoken command. With the telepathic ability of Sekaisho Tenrei activated, Raizo sent out his own onslaught of power at Shuren. The psionic blast was not visible, but it would be felt without a doubt by Shuren. A blistering wave of mental power, it would screech through the Visored's mind, disrupting his focus and thoughts, even his ability to manipulate his limbs or focus energy into techniques. Raizo was mounting an attack on the man's very consciousness of self, hoping to wear down Shuren's mind. Raizo mind not be able to punch through the wind, but the Shinigami's mind, so purely determined, might be able to force the other Captain-level fighter to a standstill. There were no guarantees in a fight like this or with an ability like Makuya, but Raizo had just left the realm of certainty. All he had was hope - hope that he could withstand defeat.

Raizo initiated the last of his Tendo hand seals and visibly increased his strength, and used the boost to make a move of his own. It was a Zanjutsu technique that had him strike the ground and send ripples of shockwaves in Shuren’s direction. It was a formidable technique, but unfortunately for Raizo Shuren’s strength was on another level than his current one. Imitating the same moves as Raizo had done, the young man raised his sword in the air. The Gudoudama behind him started to circle around his body, as he struck the ground in a flash. His condensed Bankai’s massive cutting power was more than enough to neutralize the incoming threat. Though he didn’t overpowered the technique, simply because he knew Raizo had enough to deal with and he was interested to see which technique of his Bankai he would use. He didn’t even give the possibility of him not releasing his final state a chance, as he thought and knew Raizo was cleverer than that.

And not much later, just like he had anticipated, the head of the Shinoda Clan unleashed his Bankai. His sword shone brightly like the sun and an armor formed over his plain Shihakushou, both buzzing intensely. Although the Captain’s Bankai really was something to see, he still hadn’t resolved his problem. Three tornadoes were advancing towards him. Now, what would he use to counter it? “Probably Kago.” thought Shuren, expecting his friend to use his defensive technique. But that didn’t happen. Instead of observing a defensive stance or anything of that sort, the Vizard Commander started to think of random things. His grip on his sword loosened momentarily and he felt like he was watching himself from third person. Not much later he pulled himself together for a while and figured what was going on. “I see… He went straight for Makuya.” He acknowledged. As he was attacking physically, pushing every boundary one could think of, Raizo was doing the same in the realm of the mind. He needed to be fast and decisive. Or he would remain dull. So he ran, perhaps unlike anything Raizo had seen before. His superior speed being enhanced by his Bankai made him one of the fastest beings alive, almost making him look like he was teleporting back and forth. He started running in circles around Raizo. It helped him remain focused as much as he could and from there on he hoped to figure out what to do next.

    *later*

Shuren panted. He and Raizo had been going at it for hours, and the effect of their fight had started to manifest itself as a depletion of his stamina. Even though his Bankai was still active, he could feel that it had run its course. His wounds were tingling in pain. He stared down at his friend with a fierce look, and tightened his grip on his white sword, tainting its pure color with blood. Straightening his back and his posture, he sighed and spat the blood inside his mouth out. That moment, a calm breeze of wind hit his face and helped him relax his muscles. He waited until the pleasant feeling was over and once it was, he charged at Raizo who had been standing some distance away. He roared as he closed the distance, his voice echoing due to his Bankai, and prepared his sword. Aiming for the man’s neck, the Vizard Commander swung his sword downwards diagonally from right to left, using whatever strength that was left in his muscles.

Another shard of Raizo's armor fell to the ground with a soft "thump." its interior surface was coated with blood. The Shinigami's blood. By the state of his armor, Raizo had bought his freedom from the wind prison and defended it dearly. A long slash ran from above his right eye, down his face, all the way to his lip. He'd have a nasty scar in the morning on his face, in addition to the others that crisscrossed his Shihakusho. But that was the least of his worries. With only his left forearm still covered in armor, he was no longer as durable as he was against opponents of his skill level. Furthermore, he was just as tired as his opponent. He supposed it was a point of pride to have been able to bring Shuren to this point. Raizo knew that even though personally he was one of the strongest soldiers Soul Society could offer in the physical combat arts, Shuren vastly outclassed him in just about everything else.

That was of little relevance now, as Shuren charged Raizo head-on. A move uncharacteristic of the other man, Raizo would have normally been disappointed at the move's lack of complexity. But with the two fighters nearing the ends of their reserves, it made sense. Summoning his own depths of power, Raizo shouted and lifted his armored left arm to block the slash while answering the diagonal slash from Shuren with one from Raizo's own blade, mirroring the Visored Commander's attack with his own. A moment before Raizo's attack would have connected, the Shinigami felt his left arm's gauntlet shatter under the brunt from Shuren's blow. The exhausted arm muscles folded under the strength of Shuren's attack, unable to fully block the force, and Shuren's Zanpakuto bit deep into Raizo's collarbone. The pain caused Raizo to lose focus for a moment, misdirecting his own sword towards Shuren's left collarbone as well.
